Poland is considering introducing temporary border controls with Germany in the coming months, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Wednesday.
“I have informed our neighbours, not only Germany but also other neighbouring countries, that I will not hesitate to introduce temporary controls,” Tusk said during a debate in parliament.
This step will be taken “if the situation at the border is tense and the pressure is high,” he said.
However, the Polish prime minister emphasized that border controls would place a considerable burden on many Poles who commute to work in neighbouring Germany.
Shortly after the new German government took office in May, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt tightened border controls and ordered border officials to deny irregular migrants entry to the country even if they apply for asylum, prompting criticism from Poland.
The German government plans to stick to this practice even after a court ruling prohibited turning away asylum seekers at the border.
